One of the great Hollywood films of 1939, this adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel is sumptuously put together, boasting a fine script, tight direction by German export William Dieterle, and a cast who fit their parts perfectly: Charles Laughton superb as the maligned Quasimodo; Maureen O'Hara in an early role as gypsy Esmeralda; Cedric Hardwicke as the pious Frollo; and Harry Davenport as the king, Louis XI.

The story is a version of Beauty and the Beast set within the confines of Notre Dame Cathedral and the dirt-strewn and prejudiced streets of Paris. Quasimodo, physically repulsive and deafened by the bells of the cathedral, nevertheless finds it in his childish heart to love the beautiful Romani woman Esmeralda and to sacrifice his sanctuary for her. She however only has eyes for the dashing Gringoire (Edmond O'Brien) who she saves from the justice of the beggar thieves.

It is Laughton's performance that holds this film together - truly one of the greatest screen actors, capable of portraying pathos like no other. Contrast this film role with his Henry VIII or Captain Bligh and you begin to get an idea of his impressive range.

Do Paříže přichází tlupa potulných cikánů, aby si na tržišti přivydělali peníze ke svému kočovnému životu. Krásná Esmeralda tančí k potěše především pánské části přihlížejících, a líbí se nejen kapitánu lučištníku Phoebovi, ale i herci Grengoirovi, který se marně snaží svou hrou zaujmout diváky. Tomu se sice podaří dívku chytit, ale únosu zabrání Grengoire, který přivolává pomoc a vojáci hrbáče zatýkají s tím, že bude druhý den pranýřován, za únos. Esmeralda je odvedena ke králi podsvětí a současně s ní je sem nedobrovolně odveden i Grengoire, kterého považují za špeha a chtějí jej pověsit. Esmeralda ho zachraňuje, a stává se podle nepsaného zákona pařížské spodiny jeho ženou……

Tento príbeh je už dosť známi a bol už nespočetne krát sfilmovaný, poväčšinou ide o kvalitné verzie a tento počin sa veselo môže radiť medzi tie najlepšie. Čierno-biely film prináša svoje čaro, ktoré je u týchto starých filmov nezameniteľné a dokáže svojím prevedeným upútať, dokonca aj herecké zanietenie postáv je ozdobou filmu, dokážu vniesť do postáv buď dramatickosť alebo aj odľahčenie či určitú hravosť(Český dabing tiež spravil svoje v dobrom zmysle), ďalej aj kamera, kostými a kulisy svojím prevedeným sa povyšujú na veľmi dobrú úroveň, čím sa dá toto dielo označiť za veľmi zručne zvládnuté po všetkých stránkach a určite stojí za pozretie.

Golden Earrings has been a long time favorite of mine and is probably the most romantic movie I know. Dietrich plays against her usual type. Here she's dark-haired, earthy and not in the least bit mysterious. Instead of a femme fatale, she'a tower of strength and energetically sets out to use all her resources to help Denistoun survive and reach his goal. To make sure that he's a really convincing gypsy, she pierces his ears and has him wear her dead lover's golden earrings. With his clothes and some grease, she transforms him from an effete British gentleman into a wild and sexy looking man.

When I was growing up I used to hear the song "Golden Earrings" which is sung in the film. I think the tune is hummed a little by Dietrich. /There's a story the gypsies know is true /That when your love wears golden earrings /She belongs to you.

The best Greek movie of all seasons... This movie is the peak of the Greek cinema. It teaches to the whole world how a movie should be made. It has wonderful music and songs, excellent dialogues, sophisticated jokes, and a happy end, which we all want, don't we? A strong point of this movie is that it preserves the picture of the purity of the Greek society in early 1900s, a picture that had already started to disappear, and the makers of the film seem to know that. It is more a laographical- anthropological work than a movie.

All the actors are here in the best role of their career. Even the young Tzeni Karezi, in her first role! Avlonitis also became legendary for his performance as the old man with the golden heart. Fotopoulos plays the patient young man who follows Pavlaras just because he is too old to do it alone. Something that most people don't know is that Manos Hatzidakis wrote the music of this film, and I believe this is the best work in his life, too. "Garyfallo st' afti" (=carnation to the ear)remains until today one of the most popular Greek songs.

The film very soon had had a sequel, "Laterna, ftocheia kai garyfallo", as result of the unbelievable success it had.

It is remarkable that the common people in Greece like this movie more than the "I Kalpiki Lira", which was made with the purpose to become the best Greek movie of all seasons. Truly, in Laterna, ftocheia kai filotimo the philosophical and other ideas come out more naturally, are not "pushed to". I love this film. Is a part of my life.

As she is the sort of fragile, other-worldly spirit that one fears will come to mischief in this cruel world, the viewer is mightily relieved when she is taken up by the gypsies - at least this particular brand of comparatively gentle Roma - as their simple way of life seems better suited to her future than "ordinary" growing up and marriage to a "normal" person would be. With the gorgeous and kindly Roma boy (played by the stunningly attractive Ian McShane), Brydie feels loved and safe; and one senses that their life together will be relatively uncomplicated by modern annoyances. (It is something of a parallel to the George Hamilton/Yvette Mimieux romance in "Light in the Piazza," made a few years earlier.) I loved this film, and wished to enter into the pretty-but-now-mostly-vanished English countryside of the time. John Mills and Hayley worked together well on several occasions, and of course, Mother Mary's story was charming. Highly recommended for anyone with an ounce of romance in their souls.

Jugoslávský barevný film Nákupčí peří režiséra Aleksandra Petroviče je nesporně nejvýznamnějším činem a mezinárodně nejúspěšnějším dílem jugoslávské kinematografie posledních let. Vypráví baladický milostný příběh z jugoslávské Vojvodiny, z kraje, v němž žije pohromadě zcela nezvyklá směsice národností. Vedle Srbů, Slovinců, Rumunů a Maďarů je zde i velké množství Cikánů. Festivalu jugoslávských filmů v PULE 1967 získal film Velkou zlatou Arénu, jeho režisér Zlatou Arénu, herec Baťa Živojinovič Zlatou Arénu za herecký výkon ještě v dalších dvou filmech, herec Bekim Fehmiu Stříbrnou Arénu, Tomislav Pinter získal za kameru Cenu za nejlepší fotografii.

Nákupčí peří přináší syrový, naturalistický a ničím nepřikrášlený pohled na život cikánské komunity v místech, kde se doslova zastavil čas. Aleksandar Petrović (režisér i scénárista) se svým filmem sklízel úspěchy snad na všech frontách. Příliš často se nestává, aby film s tak silně uměleckými rysy získal přízeň současně u kritiků i diváků, leč Nákupčímu peří se to dokonale podařilo a svou pouť zakončil Oscarovou nominací, zlatou sošku si ale nakonec odnesly Ostře sledované vlaky.

She finds free spirited friends (Honor Blackman and Mark Burns as the shockingly living-in-sin pair Mrs Fawcett and Maj Eastwood) and becomes enamoured of the brooding Roma man (Nero) whose blue eyes look at her with true desire.

There are recurring motifs throughout the film - mainly of water, which has much to contribute to the climax of events which make up Yvette's mind conclusively. Does she stay and marry Leo (a rich man's son with little personality - played by Jeremy Bulloch) or does she take her chance in a world which accepts her? It is interesting to compare this film with the earlier 'Sky West and Crooked' which took similar themes (and the same story as a starting point of suggestion) but went in a quite different direction.

Tento film připadá mi jako vkusně natočená romantická četba pro paní a dívky (tedy taková lepší alternativní červená knihovna). A subtle and complex story. I found this movie to be low-key and subtle. There are three parallel story streams led by Delon as the Roma man Hugo Sennart, Meurisse as Yan Kuq the fence and safe cracker, and Bozzuffi as the cop whose task it is to bring them in. The film is character driven, but interest in the characters grows while watching the film as opposed to movies in which the characters demand attention from the beginning. It is a story primarily about men. These are hard people whether The Gypsy, cop, or thief, and any sentimentality is tempered with cold reality. Several scenes with Alain Delon and young boys support the growing understanding that Sennart (Delon)is running out of time and add to the sense of underlying melancholy. The scene with Delon watching the flight of flamingos is something I will never forget or grow tired of watching. I would describe this movie as beautiful - subdued - with strong emotional undercurrents.

Připouštím, že jsem tento snímek lehce nadhodnotila, váhala jsem mezi čtyřmi a pěti hvězdičkami. Nakonec u mě zvítězilo hvězdiček pět. Jen by mne zajímalo, zda neexistuje více českých dabingů (dabingforum uvádí jen jeden). Ten, který dělala v roce 1994 ČST, je výborný.

I agree that is better than Gatliff or Kusturica as a "Roma" movie , nobody was more authentic in depicting Roma life as Loteanu , costumes are authentic , besides main characters the rest of SATRA are real ethnic Roma, not look- alike , songs are sung in Romany not Russian or whatever , and they were sung in a lot of weddings or parties in Romania , everybody knew them (even people who never watched the movie).As I said Roma are depicted as they are : with qualities , with defects , no stereotypes , unbiased. They are not the Gypsies of SNATCH , where (Brad Pitt -

) looks anything you like : Chinese,Arab,east-European.....whatever but never like a Roma man. Who wants to know more about Roma nation they should watch this movie . It is a sad and impossible love but I do not say more I let the viewer to judge this movie . Myself I was impressed and I had a wonderful experience re-watching this movie , you award this with an Oscar and still is not enough... It is a must see !

Odehrává se v časově cyklickém světě dětinně vnímané skutečnosti, v myšlení, založeném na představě, že když vidím, stačí si vzít. Vždyť když by to mělo být na opak, zachoval bych se přece stejně a rozdělil se s druhým o vše, co mám. Divoká, pudová touha po samostatnosti tak trochu pro samostatnost samu také stojí u tragického konce obou milenců. Zděšení, které prochvívá táborem po jejich násilné smrti, přeskakuje opět do výchozí dětinné polohy; palič, přichycený při činu, je upřímně zdrcen jeho následky. Film obsahuje prakticky všechny současné prvky cikánského sebevyloučení z moderní společnosti a dokládá značnou bezmoc prakticky každé většinové společnosti při pokusech o její pozitivní řešení. Dobrodružné se v tomto světle mění v hyperromantické a zřejmě i klasické. A nadmíru inspirující.

A doomed, bittersweet romance, since both of their families aggressively oppose their relationship. Sadly, Jakub & Jolanka's earnest love for one another becomes tinged with tragedy, as class prejudice, familial squabbles and threats of violence corrupt the innocent lover's bliss. Dusan's elegiac, humane, emotionally honest love story reaching a uniquely heartfelt and dramatically rewarding climax.

It would be a great disservice to gifted filmmaker, Dusan and his extraordinary film to liken it to another. 'Ruzové sny' aka 'Rose Tinted Dreams' is a unique, perpetually effervescing delight, expressing a richly beguiling character all of its own. The film's lively idiosyncratic qualities are no small testament to the remarkable talents of the uncommonly gifted crew and truly delightful cast of natural, wholly unaffected actors. Křehký příběh o vzájemném citu těchto dvou velkých „dětí“ se pohybuje mezi skutečností a snem, ve kterém se čas od času zdá všechno snazší… Pro hlavní role tehdy Dušan Hanák objevil mladého Juraje Nvotu (osobitý herec, dnes režisér vynikajícího bratislavského divadla Astorka Korzo 90) a tehdy mladinkou brněnskou studentku herectví Ivu Bittovou.

The story covers three generations of a Gypsy family from the 40s into the 70s and is narrated by Robert's character, which provides an interesting continuity. It's not great, but it's good enough and provides a window into this unconventional culture, their traveling lifestyle, interactions, work (including "fortune telling"), schemes, music, dancing and misadventures.
